About Barón de Ley Blanco sobre Lías

Behind grand edifices lie compelling narratives that serve as a legacy for the region in which they are erected. In the case of Baron de Ley, a winery located in the Navarrese town of Mendavia, it was constructed as far back as 1548 as a fortress castle specifically designed to withstand attacks and provide protection to its inhabitants. Over the years, it came into the possession of the Benedictine order, whose monks were masterful in the art of crafting wines and spirits. However, it wasn't until 1985 that the building adopted the name Baron de Ley by a select group of esteemed professionals from the Rioja region who embarked on a project styled after the Médoc châteaux.

With an extensive portfolio of wines and a total production exceeding 5,000,000 bottles annually, Baron de Ley Blanco sobre Lías exemplifies the exemplary work undertaken by this renowned winery. It is a blend of two indigenous varieties from the DOCa. Rioja; the garnacha blanca sourced from an estate in La Rioja Oriental with sandy soils featuring calcareous gravel and little depth, and the tempranillo blanco from vineyards planted at high altitudes on permeable sandy soils. The harvest is manual, and once at the winery, each variety is vinified separately in concrete tanks. Subsequently, the wine remains on its lees for approximately 6 months, in a combination of concrete and French oak barrels. Finally, it is blended in a concrete tank for an additional 6 months until the date of bottling.
