Pago de los Capellanes Finca El Picón is a single-variety Tempranillo red wine produced by the Pago de los Capellanes winery in the D.O. Ribera del Duero, Spain.

Wine & Spirits magazine listed Pago de los Capellanes among the 100 best wineries in the world; proof of the excellent international reputation that this family winery, in Pedrosa de Duero, Burgos, has earned through hard work and high quality, and now one of the best known winemakers.

The word “Pago” refers to a plot of land, particularly in vineyards or olive groves. This one in particular used to belong to the town chaplains (capellanes) in the fourteenth century, hence its name: Pago de los Capellanes.

There are two plots in particular whose characteristics produce unique wines of extraordinary quality. This is down to low-yield agriculture and plenty of patience and dedication. One of these plots is where Pago de los Capellanes Finca El Picón comes from. Vines planted in loamy clay soils with gravel and influenced by a climate with significant temperature contrasts between day and night, which is great for ripening, alcohol strength, colour, tannins and a very balanced acidity. These plots are harvested selectively in 15 kg boxes.

When the clusters reach the winery they are left to rest in a cold chamber for 24 hours before being processed in order to preserve their best characteristics. The grapes ferment in French oak wood vats at a controlled temperature to achieve their maximum expression. Fermentation is activated using an already fermenting must that is made with selected yeasts from the plot itself.

After 40 days the wine is devatted by bleeding to start the malolactic fermentation that takes place in French oak barrels for 32 days without adding bacteria. It is then aged for 22 months in select-grain French oak barrels. It is racked four times and bottled without filtering or clarifying. To finish, the wine rests for 40 months in the winery before being sold.

Pago de los Capellanes Finca El Picón 2019 unveils a rich olfactory tapestry brimming with the essence of ripe red and black fruits (cherries, currants, blackberries) intricately woven with a subtle infusion of timber and spices (cinnamon, clove, cedar, oak). On the palate, it asserts itself as full-bodied, flavorsome, and emphatic, draping the taste receptors in a silken texture, unveiling an elegantly structured tannic backbone, culminating in a lingering finish that beckons one to further indulge in its complexity. This red wine is an embodiment of the terroir from which it originates, exuding a distinctive character and a beguiling maturity.

Pago de los Capellanes Finca El Picón 2018 is a mature red wine boasting intense aromas of forest red and black fruit, complemented by profound balsamic notes and spicy undertones derived from its ageing process. On the palate, it is meaty, profound, and impeccably balanced. A medium to full-bodied wine with a vibrant acidity and fine, velvety tannins. The finish is extended and remarkably persistent.
2014 Pago de los Capellanes Finca El Picón 2014 is a single-plot red wine that is powerful and expressive. On the nose it evokes blackberries and balsamic notes, with touches of cinnamon, leather and black liquorice. The palate is intense and round, with a mid-palate of sweet and elegant tannins and an exquisite finish.
2006 A red wine with a complex attack and sweet tannins which coat the palate with its delicious roundness. Long and persistent finish. It is a wine that opens up slowly captivating our senses as we taste it.

Dark cherry colour with intense maroon edges. Intense, clean and bright wine with a high robe. Abundant tears.

Initially, some balsamic aromas, notes of blackberries and undergrowth typical from Ribera del Duero are noticed along with spicy touches (traditional in wines aged in French oak), cinnamon, leather, tobacco, truffles and black liquorice.
2003 The entry on the palate is complex, with sweet tannins that envelop the palate and papillae covering with a fine round. The power structure reminds us of the goodness of the grapes from which comes its aftertaste and makes us remember the varietal aromas in fermentation were expressed in the harvest.
