About Los Frailes Trilogía
Los Frailes Trilogía is the first wine to be made by Miguel and María José Velázques, the thirteenth and latest generation of a family that has been running the family’s winery, Casa Los Frailes, for four centuries.
With this wine, the Velázquez family are writing a new chapter in the story of this family business that has traditionally been dedicated to making bulk wines. This change began 30 years ago when Carlos Velázquez, father of Miguel and María José, suggested to his children that they start bottling the wine they were making in the 130 hectares of vineyards surrounding the winery. But it didn’t stop there. These siblings raised the stakes and added other ideas to their father’s suggestion, which were received with great enthusiasm, like converting to organic agriculture (gaining certification in 2002). Of course this involved a drastic change in their way of doing things; there was now no place for pesticides or chemical fertilisers. Two years later, the first vintage of Los Frailes Trilogía was released, becoming a great revelation and the winery’s flagship.
In this wine, Cabernet Sauvignon, Monastrell and Tempranillo majestically blend together to produce a very special wine that has reached the highest levels. The varieties are grown in different plots. The Cabernet Sauvignon is grown in ‘Casas de aperos’, a site with ruby red limestone soils that are very rich in iron, while the Monastrell comes directly from the ‘La Parada’ plot, where the high levels of silica allow the plant to develop good roots. All the vineyards, with an average age of 20 years old, are planted at an altitude of 650 metres above sea level and grow in a continental Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot, dry summers. The Mediterranean Sea, just a few kilometres away, causes contrasting temperatures between day and night, providing the plants with a time to breathe and cool until sunrise.
In the winery, the minimal intervention approach is maintained, limiting work to basic operations like racking, batonnage and the use of small quantities of sulphur dioxide. Maceration is the first step in the Los Frailes Trilogía production process and also plays a key role. After arriving at the winery and being crushed, the must ferments. Once this process has finished, the wine stays in contact with the skins for 25 days (the Monastrell) and 18 days (the Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo). Finally, after a gentle pressing, Los Frailes Trilogía is transferred to new Hungarian oak barrels (medium toast) where it ages for a minimum of 12 months.
It is during this time that the work with the lees and the batonnages is important. Los Frailes Trilogía is a perfect wine where personality, freshness and sweetness come together. The perfect trio to delight in.
