White wines from Portugal
A treasure to discover
Fresh, vibrant, profiled, light, full-bodied white wines, full of the authenticity brought by the amazing diversity of regional grapes they are made from. Wines that overflow with Atlantic character and combine tradition and modernity.
Portugal has an exciting wine offering that goes beyond the sweet or fortified Port wines. We have carefully prepared this selection of white wines from Portugal, a country where there is plenty still to be discovered.
If you haven’t tried them yet, this is your chance! These wines are also exceptional value for money. See for yourself!
The Regions and Varieties You Should Know
Portugal presents a fascinating wine offering that extends beyond the sweet and fortified wines of Oporto. It is divided into regions with distinct personalities, where local grapes are the true stars:
-
Vinho Verde and the Alvarinho Grape: in the far northwest, the Monção and Melgaço region produces some of the freshest and most long-lived white wines. The alvarinho here is serious, mineral, and boasts an enviable citrus structure. The loureiro also stands out, known for its elegance and floral aromas.
-
The Douro and Its Mountain Whites: renowned for their ageing potential, Douro whites are often blends of varieties such as rabigato, gouveio, and viosinho. These are full-bodied wines, often with subtle wood notes and a mineral acidity that renders them timeless.
-
Dão and the Elegance of Encruzado: the Dão region is the birthplace of encruzado, considered by many to be Portugal's most noble white grape. It produces wines with an almost Burgundian texture, balanced and with a fascinating potential for bottle ageing.
-
Alentejo and the Southern Sun: here, the whites are broader and riper. Varieties such as antão vaz or arinto offer rounded wines, with notes of tropical fruit and a smoothness ideal for pairing with Mediterranean cuisine.
Wineries Leading in Quality
Our selection includes the names that have revolutionised the prestige of Portuguese white wines:
-
Anselmo Mendes and Quinta de Soalheiro: the great masters of alvarinho in Vinho Verde. Their wines are a lesson in purity and precision.
-
Niepoort: with its relentless pursuit of freshness in the Douro, its whites (such as the iconic Redoma) are benchmarks of elegance and mineral character.
-
António Madeira: a fundamental figure in Dão for discovering the sophistication and balance of the encruzado grape.
-
Esporão: in Alentejo, this winery combines tradition and sustainability to offer whites with internationally recognised consistency and quality.
The finest white wines of Portugal: from the refreshing Vinho Verde to the mineral structure of Douro. Step in and let yourself be guided by the richness of its indigenous grapes.
