About Belguardo
If there is one winemaking family that has absolute mastery of Tuscany, it is undoubtedly the Mazzei family. Based in Castello di Fonterutoli, a 650-hectare estate in the heart of Chianti Classico, they make some of the region’s most famous wines. But if there is one thing this famous family is known for, it is their constant search for new winegrowing areas. So, in the mid-1990s, Mazzei bought a 70-hectare estate in the Maremma region, a splendid and gentle mountainous area facing the Tyrrhenian Sea and stretching between Grosseto and Montiano (Tuscany).
Having predicted the great potential of the estate, and in line with their philosophy of enhancing the “terroir”, they created Tenuta di Belguardo, a winery with a clearly classic Mediterranean style that in a short time has become a reference both in the area and around the world. One example of this great success is Belguardo, a red wine made with Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Cabernet Franc grapes from the estate’s most important “Cru”. These vines are planted in limestone terroir, harvested at the optimum point of ripeness and vinified at a controlled temperature with a 16 day maceration. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels before being bottled.
Made with foreign varieties, Belguardo is a clear example of how well Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are suited to the region. A pure expression of the “terroir” of the DOC Maremma Toscana.

2017 |
Tenuta Belguardo 2017 is a concentrated red wine with aromas of blackcurrants, cherries and blackberries, notes of sweet spices and balsamic and tobacco hints. On the palate it is incisive, flavoursome and long-lasting. A medium-bodied wine with firm tannins, pronounced acidity and a lingering finish with hints of black fruit, spice and cedar. |
