About Reta TA/RRAZ

Mogarraz, a municipality nestled within the Sierra de Salamanca (Castilla y León), is affectionately dubbed “the village of faces” owing to the over 700 portraits adorning the facades of its homes. These paintings, conceived by the prominent Salamancan artist Florencio Maillo, draw inspiration from photographs taken 50 years earlier by photographer Alejandro Maratón. Among these images is a depiction of the grandmother of Marcelo Retamal, a renowned Chilean producer with Spanish roots who crafts wines both in Chile and in the Spanish regions of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Rioja, and Sierra de Salamanca. In homage to his heritage, he introduces us to Reta TA/RRAZ featuring his grandmother's portrait on the label—a wine that, much like his family, is distinctly marked by its origins.

Born from three fragmented vineyards, diminutive in size and perched on the mountain slopes amidst the forest in the Sierra de Salamanca (Castilla y León), Reta TA/RRAZ is principally composed of the indigenous rufete grape, complemented by modest amounts of other local varieties such as calabrés (garnacha), aragonés, and other white grape strains. These ancient vines, rooted in granitic soils at altitudes of 550-700 meters above sea level, are cultivated with conscientious practices, yielding no more than an average of 1kg per vine. The viticulture is performed with care, and the harvest is done manually at the peak of ripeness. Once in the winery, fermentation takes place with whole clusters and native yeasts. Lastly, the wine matures for 14 months in fourth-use oak barrels.

Thus, Reta TA/RRAZ is more than just a wine; it is a living testament to the bond between past and present. It is a tribute to a legacy of generations that has preserved the art of winemaking with a distinct identity.

Reta TA/RRAZ 2021 extends an invitation to immerse oneself in an odyssey of ripe red fruit aromas, such as cherries and raspberries, accompanied by a spicy undertone that enhances its complexity. Upon tasting, it reveals itself to be luscious and well-rounded, boasting a concentration of flavors that mirror its fruity bouquet and a maturity that glides seamlessly into a lingering finish. This limited-edition red wine, with only 2,618 bottles produced, offers an authentic expression of its terroir, encapsulating the quintessence of the indigenous grape variety of the region.
