About Rara Avis Prieto Picudo

Rara Avis Prieto Picudo is a barrel-aged red wine made by Raúl Pérez in Castilla y León with the native Prieto Picudo variety.

Winemaker, consultant and viticulturist, Raúl Pérez makes wines that are always highly acclaimed around the world. The key lies in his work in the vineyard. Although he has completely mastered the soils in his native Bierzo, he works in any place where he finds exceptional terroirs, like Rías Baixas, Ribeira Sacra, Monterrei, Madrid and even outside Spain in South Africa and Africa.

Rara Avis Prieto Picudo comes from a few hundred-year-old vines planted on clay-calcareous soils at an altitude of 350 metres above sea level. They are cultivated in a way that takes care of the terroir and the vine, and the harvest is carried out manually at the optimum point of ripeness.

In the winery, the Rara Avis Prieto Picudo grapes are destemmed and they spontaneously ferment in oak vats with native yeasts and no temperature control. The wine then ages for 18 months in 5-year-old French oak barrels.

As its name suggests, Rara Avis Prieto Picudo is a difficult wine to find. This is a small production wine where Raúl Pérez showcases the full power of the Prieto Picudo variety.
