About Protos Reserva

Protos Reserva is a red wine from the Ribera del Duero region produced by Bodegas Protos, a winery founded in 1927. The term ‘protos’ derives from the greek Word for ‘first’. The winery took this name since it was indeed the first winery in the Ribera del Duero region. The winery is located Peñafiel, a town in Valladolid.

The area is home to a mediterranean climate with a continental influence, characterised by little rainfall (the most occuring during spring and autumn), dry summers and long, harsh winters. Temperatures vary greatly between seasons, but also between day and night, which causes a slow ripening of the grapes.

The wine is made solely using Tinta del País (Tempranillo) grapes, which are taken from vineyards that are planted at an altitude of 750-900 metres. The harvest is carried out manually using 20kg capacity boxes.

As for the ageing process, Protos Reserva spends a minimum of 18 months in French and American oak barrels and after spends a minimum of 24 months in the bottle before being put on the market.
