About Matassa Rouge

Matassa Rouge is a natural red wine made from Carignan with a little Grey Carignan and White Carignan in co-plantation. It is produced by Domaine Matassa, a winery in Languedoc-Roussillon.

Domaine Matassa is a winery founded in 200 by Tom Lubbe, a New Zealander who grew up in South Africa. The winery cultivates its strains of native varieties organically and biodynamically, planted at an altitude of over 450 metres. Their yields are very low, about 3,500 kg per hectare on average and are vinified with native yeasts and using either very low levels of sulphites or without adding anything. Its wines are pleasant, fresh and vibrant.

The vineyards for Matassa Rouge are located on terraces consisting of marl. The vines are very old and in the countryside Carignan, Grey Carignan and White Carignan are found mixed together. They are cultivated organically and biodynamically and their yield is very low, about 15 hectolitres per hectare. They are harvested manually so that the grapes are selected in the field and arrive intact in the winery and without breaking berries.

Matassa Rouge ferments and undergoes a very short maceration with the skins for only 4 to 8 days. It ferments with native yeasts, and once fermented the wine is aged for 16 to 20 months in 500 litredemi-muids - large barrels. It is bottled without filtering or clarifying.

Matassa Rouge is an intense and structured natural wine. It has an ageing potential of around 5 years.
2018 Matassa Rouge 2018 is a wine that displays aromas of red fruit, with spicy, mineral and smoky touches. On the palate it is fresh, intense, direct and linear. It is tasty and deep, with hints of coffee, mountain herbs, liquorice and juicy ripe fruits.
