About Château Cos d'Estournel Les Pagodes de Cos

Rumor has it that in some national literary competitions, the finalist works are nothing short of rivaling the winners. In fact, there are those who assert that they are superior and of higher quality. By analogy, a similar phenomenon can be observed in the world of wine, where those vintages deemed inferior may be on par with—or even surpass—those of greater renown.

In France, for instance, this is evident between A.O.C. Pauillac and A.O.C. Saint-Estèphe. Both appellations are located in the northern part of Médoc, nestled between the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic, within an area characterized by more than 20 distinct soil types. Separated merely by a modest stream, there are virtually no climatic or terroir differences between them. Yet, according to the Official 1855 Bordeaux Wine Classification, the quality of these neighboring zones cannot be deemed equal. As per this hierarchy, established by Napoleon III for the Paris Universal Exposition, A.O.C. Pauillac merits inclusion among the premier cru, whereas the chateaux of A.O.C. Saint-Estèphe are consigned to the remaining four categories. Far from being disheartened, this motivates the continued production of high-quality wines, such as Les Pagodes de Cos.

Les Pagodes de Cos is a red wine crafted at château Cos d'Estournel, utilizing a blend of different grape varieties meticulously cultivated according to the terrain, vine age, vineyard orientation, and quality. The objective is to extract the finest attributes of the terroir and the grape varieties. This differentiation is upheld in the winery, where each variety is vinified separately. Innovation has always been a distinguishing feature of château Cos d'Estournel, and it continues today under its new proprietor, Michel Reybier. His commitment to avant-garde facilities is evident with the introduction of isothermal truncated tanks and a gravity-only production process.

The remainder of the miracle will transpire in the cellar, carved beneath the vat room, completely insulated and with a constant temperature, where the wine will mature in new oak barrels.
