About Laus Crianza

Most flowers flourish in serene and picturesque settings. However, the poppy is an exception. This bloom, which sprouts in the most unexpected of terrains, emerges where life becomes increasingly arduous. Resilient and indefatigable, the plant was even spotted in the trenches of World War I, amidst the battlefield's carnage and destruction (since then, it has been adopted as a symbol of peace in countries such as the United Kingdom). With such a backstory, there is no more apt emblem for the label of Laus Crianza, a red blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon crafted by Bodegas Laus, situated in Huesca, within the D.O. Somontano (in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula).

Just like the poppy, Laus Crianza originates from the infertile lands to the south of the appellation. Here, in the Las Almunietas area, one encounters a limestone and stony soil, interspersed with gypsum, of a loamy texture, where traditionally it was challenging for crops to thrive. Nevertheless, akin to the poppy, Laus Crianza rises amongst the stones, at altitudes ranging from 350 to 400 meters, thanks to the warm Mediterranean climate of the hinterlands, which is arid (with sparse rainfall). Here, the grape varieties achieve perfect ripeness, reaching the harvest date without any issues (which is carried out in the early hours of the morning to ensure the grapes are in prime condition).

The grape clusters will arrive at the winery, a modern structure designed with environmental sustainability in mind, where Laus Crianza will be crafted. Upon their arrival, the clusters of Laus Crianza will be received in the first of the three halls that comprise this minimalist winery. Here, the red wine will ferment in the 46 double tanks and in the eight isothermal tanks, where yeasts will convert the must into wine. The process will continue in the second hall, dedicated to aging. Here, Laus Crianza will spend eight months maturing amongst the 1,300 barrels of French and mixed oak that make up its cask collection. Finally, after this period, Laus Crianza moves to the third and final hall, the bottling area, where this unstoppable red wine will be readied for consumption.
