About Intipalka Sauvignon Blanc

Although water covers 70% of the Earth’s surface, hence the name “Blue Planet”, there are many places in the world where rainfall is less than 10 millimetres of water per year. Most of these places are found in the desert areas of Latin America and Africa and are hyper-arid zones with harsh climates. However, around these hostile environments, we can find real oases. This is true for the Ica valley, at the foot of the Andes, in Peru. This is where the Queirolo family, who emigrated from Italy in 1877, began their winemaking career in the New World and became one of the country’s leading wineries. Today, the third generation (Santiago, Jorge and Francisco Queirolo) has not only maintained their position as one of the most famous wineries in Machu Picchu country, but has also joined forces to create high-end dry wines under the name “Intipalka”, which means “Valley of the Sun” in Quechua (Inca language).

To do this, they have been planting French noble varieties since 2000 at the foot of the Andes, at 500 m above sea level and more than 60 km from the Pacific coast, using state-of-the-art technology to overcome the extreme working conditions. Their Intipalka Sauvignon Blanc is a single-variety wine made with Sauvignon Blanc vines planted in deep, loamy soils rich in magnesium. With less than 20 mm of rain per year and more than 300 sunny days, drip irrigation is used and the grapes are harvested by hand at the optimum point of ripeness, cutting each bunch and depositing it in 15 kg trays. In the winery, the must made from the selection of the best grapes is fermented in 500 hectolitre stainless steel tanks with a refrigeration system. It then spends 3 months in the bottle to enhance its fruity freshness before being released for sale.

In view of the above, Peru is not only about Pisco, as the Queirolo family proves with this Intipalka Sauvignon Blanc, a fresh, lively, high-end white wine from one of the most arid and, at the same time, most fertile lands on the planet.
