About Gaja Barbaresco Costa Russi

Gaja Barbaresco Costa Russi is a single-variety Nebbiolo wine produced by the Gaja winery, under the DOCG Barbaresco, in Piedmont, Italy.

The grapes used to make the Gaja Barbaresco Costa Russi wine come from the Costa Russi plot located in Barbaresco. This vineyard is about 65 years old and faces southwest, lying at an altitude of 230 metres, with loam, lime carbonate and clay soils. The harvest is carried out manually and thoroughly to get the best quality clusters which, after fermentation, are aged for 12 months in oak barrels and then transferred to large wooden barrels known as botti, where they rest for another year before being sold.

The Gaja family arrived in Piedmont in the middle of the 17th century and for almost five generations, they have been laying the foundations of modern viticulture and excellent quality in the region. Angelo Gaja, who leads the fourth generation, decided to break with traditional production methods by limiting vine yield to obtain fewer but more concentrated and higher quality clusters, abandoning late harvests and excessive extraction, turning Piedmont’s old tannic and dry wines into examples of elegance and refinement with the Nebbiolo variety at its best. Seductive and long-living wines that continue to improve as the years go by.

2015 Gaja Barbaresco Costa Russi 2015 is a red wine with floral aromas of violets on the nose, as well as notes of herbs, roasted coffee, currants and ripe plums. It also has hints of chocolate accompanied by balsamics like mint. On the palate it is flavoursome and robust. It is full of fruit but also has a mineral hue and elegant and silky lingering tannins. A wine with great ageing potential.
