About El Enemigo Gran Enemigo El Cepillo

The golden ratio, also known as golden section, golden number, or divine number, is an irrational algebraic number that has many interesting properties and is found in some geometric figures, as well as in nature itself. It is considered to have an aesthetic character and a mystical importance. This magical proportionality enhances the beauty of things.

85/15 is the divine ratio that Alejandro Vigil uses for his single vineyard wines. This showy Argentine winemaker has managed to find harmony and beauty in the proportion of 85% Cabernet Franc and 15% Malbec, which has resulted in wines with a perfect balance between Bordeaux elegance and Argentine authenticity.

One example of this work is Gran Enemigo El Cepillo, a red wine that starts life at an altitude of 1,300 metres in the La Pampa El Cepillo vineyard in San Carlos (Mendoza). There, colluvial soils predominate with marine limestone below. This coupage is made using Alejandro Vigil’s divine proportion (85% Cabernet Franc and 15% Malbec). The bunches are harvested in 5 different rounds, with one and a half months between the first and last harvest.

The grapes are first cold macerated for 5 days and then they undergo an average maceration of 23 days, usually with 30% of the clusters whole. The must ferments in barrels using native yeasts at medium temperature. The resulting wine is aged for 15 months in 100-year-old foudres.

“El Enemigo” is the name of the range of wines made by Alejandro Vigil together with Adrianna Catena (Catena Zapata), at the project they both lead through their Aleanna winery.

Vigil, also known as “the Messi of wine”, is a winemaker who has managed to put Argentine viticulture back in the spotlight. In 2018, this South American country received its first 100 Parker points in history, twice, with two wines made by Alejandro Vigil: Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard River Stones 2016, a wine from the Catena Zapata winery, where Vigil is also director of enology, and Gran Enemigo Single Vineyard Gualtallary Cabernet Franc 2013, a red wine from his own project, Aleanna (El Enemigo).

Gran Enemigo El Cepillo is a high altitude wine. A red wine with a Bordeaux soul and an Argentine accent that can be enjoyed now, but that also promises some beautiful surprises after spending some time in the bottle.

2018
Gran Enemigo El Cepillo 2018 is a juicy and expressive red wine. The nose is exuberant, offering fruity aromas that are very well harmonised with the aromatic herbs and spices. The palate is medium to full-bodied with notable acidity and a subtle saline touch accompanying the fruit. An elegant, fresh and vibrant red with a flavoursome finish and excellent aging potential.
