About Damien Bastian Ça Boit Libre Mon Blanc

From the aridity of Chad in Central Africa to the freshness of Lake Leman in Haute-Savoie, Damien Bastian charted an unconventional path to become one of the most intriguing winemakers in Savoie, France. Born in 1979 in Annemasse, Damien trained as an agronomist and spent several years working in horticulture in Central Africa. There, he learned to respect the land, to read its rhythms, and to understand that each plant has its own voice.

Upon returning home, his involvement in the restaurant industry brought him closer to the world of wine, and soon an idea emerged: to combine his passion for sustainable agriculture with the crafting of vibrant and authentic wines. His first stop was with Dominique Lucas, a key figure in Haute-Savoie, and in 2017 he was given the opportunity to take charge of three-quarters of a hectare of chasselas in Marignan, just half a kilometre from Lake Leman.

Today, Damien works at the historic Domaine de Marsaz, a winery with several centuries of history that had remained abandoned since 1967. There, he brings his natural wines to life with a minimal intervention approach: no added yeasts, chaptalisation, acidification, filtration, or fining. Everything, from the vine to the bottle, is done with respect for the land and the terroir.

An example of his philosophy is the Damien Bastian Ça Boit Libre Mon Blanc, made entirely from chasselas planted in 1985 on two west-facing plots, about 500 metres from Lake Leman, on glacial moraine alluvial soils with a high proportion of clay. Cultivated biodynamically and vinified with direct pressing, spontaneous fermentation, and 12 months of ageing on lees in used barrels, this wine is neither fined nor filtered, offering a fresh, direct, and lively flavour.

Damien Bastian demonstrates that in winemaking, as in life, less is more: fewer artifices, more authenticity. Damien Bastian Ça Boit Libre Mon Blanc is a reminder that the less conventional path can yield the most astonishing results.
