About D'Arenberg The Anthropocene Epoch Mencia
According to a study published in the Nature journal, for the first time in history, the mass of what has been manufactured by mankind has exceeded the mass of living beings in terms of weight. This research has illustrated some curious comparisons like the fact that the mass of plastics is already double that of animals (marine and land) and that the streets, buildings and bridges of New York alone already weigh more than the total amount of fish in the sea. Because of striking facts like these, experts claim that we have entered the Anthropocene era, a new chapter of humanity marked mainly by man’s impact on the earth. At d'Arenberg, one of South Australia’s leading wineries, this footprint is a very important factor to take into account and never forget. Because of this, and to make sure it is not forgotten, they make the D'Arenberg The Anthropocene Epoch Mencía biodynamic red.
In order to understand it better, we must remember that this winery, founded by the Osborn family in the McLaren Vale (30 minutes from the city of Adelaide), bases its entire production and winemaking system on sustainability. For them, working with 200 sheep (to eliminate weeds), getting their energy from solar panels and using natural pest control are the only ways to work. Thanks to this, all plots, both owned and rented, have NASAA certification for organic and biodynamic processes, making them the area’s leading producer with this type of certification. This is how Mencía grows on the 500 acres owned by the winery. The grapes are cultivated without chemicals, on a wide variety of soils (sandy loam, clay and limestone) and in a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers (cooled by sea breezes) and mild winters.
After tasting the grapes in the vineyard, Chester Osborn (the fourth and most recent generation of the company) decides on the optimal harvest date for D'Arenberg The Anthropocene Epoch Mencía. In the winery, the grapes are crushed in small batches that are racked into open fermenters. Before the yeasts finish turning the must into wine, D'Arenberg The Anthropocene Epoch Mencía is trodden by foot and the wine is transferred to old French oak barrels (where it will finish fermentation). It then ages there for 9 months and is bottled unfiltered and unclarified.
The best way to remember that our time on earth is not free.
