About Château Cos d'Estournel Blanc

Château Cos d'Estournel owes its name to the Marquis d'Estournel who, upon inheriting 12 hectares of vineyards in Saint-Estèphe, in the Médoc region (Bordeaux), discovered the full potential of this Cos (“hill of pebbles” in old Gascon) and decided to expand the property to make his own wine. The results were exceptional and in the 19th century, the wine had such a strong reputation that it became a regular in the Indian court. It was so successful in the east that to celebrate, the marquis decided to build a majestic building with a well-known carved wooden door, brought from the Sultan’s Palace in Zanzibar. However, at the age of 91 the so-called “Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe” went bankrupt and was forced to sell the estate, without being rewarded for his efforts with 1855 classification. After having several owners over the years, the estate is now owned by French millionaire investor Michel Reybier. This is someone who is like a fish in water in the world of wine and with an extensive knowledge of terroirs and techniques and a long-term vision, his wines regularly receive exceptional praise from international wine critics.

One of his wines, Château Cos d'Estournel Blanc is a white wine that was first released in 2005. Made from the Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon varieties, the vineyard is located in a special area in the northern part of the Médoc, near the mouth of the Garonne estuary. With the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Gironde to the east, the vines enjoy a perfect microclimate that protects them from possible extreme temperatures. The subsoil is calcareous and the soil is full of boulders of various sizes. In addition, it is regularly ploughed and sustainable methods are used in the pursuit of excellence. Once the grapes reach the winery, they are destemmed and gently pressed. The resulting must is fermented in cement tanks for 21 days. The wine then remains on its lees in new 225-litre French oak barrels for 9 months.

The result is intense, powerful and overwhelming. With an annual production of less than 1,000 cases per year, Château Cos d'Estournel Blanc is one of the great wines of the AOC Saint Estèphe with the freshness of the sea and the warmth of the land.
