César Fernández Díaz Espantaburros 2021 is a red wine that impresses with its dark, mature hue, despite its low alcohol content. On the nose, one detects notes of black olives alongside hints of red fruits such as cherries and raspberries, which impart a fresh and light character. About César Fernández Díaz Espantaburros

If you've ever heard the term "espantaburros", you might have imagined something quite intriguing, haven't you? In colloquial Spanish, espantaburros refers to a type of sage plant that grows as a thicket and is quite bothersome for livestock. It is assumed that the name is derived from its ability to "scare away" (frighten) these animals due to its discomfort. How fascinating it is, then, that César Fernández Díaz, a young oenologist from Ribera del Duero, has chosen to name one of his wines after this plant, turning something so troublesome into a genuine gem of the terroir.

César, although just beginning his journey in the world of wine, already has a clear vision of the kind of wine he wants to produce on his small 1.5 ha estate of very old family vineyards, some of which are pre-phylloxera, in Fuentelcésped (Ribera del Duero). His philosophy is simple: "I make wines I like to drink". Rather than seeking the opulence of excessive fruitiness, César prefers wines with minerality, elegance, acidity, and austerity—those that feel refined, lean, and raw, with a distinctive tension and electricity on the palate. Currently, he produces fewer than 4,000 bottles annually, but his focus on the freshness and mineral character of his wines is already a hallmark.

One of his most representative wines is this César Fernández Díaz Espantaburros, a blend of tempranillo, garnacha, and bobal from vineyards planted in 1950, cultivated using biodynamic practices and harvested at the optimal moment of ripeness. In the winery, the grapes ferment with whole clusters and indigenous yeasts, maturing in a combination of well-seasoned 500 and 600-litre barrels, along with a 125-litre amphora. The result is a wine bottled without filtering, fining, or added sulphites, preserving its purity and character.

Far from adhering to traditional conventions, César Fernández Díaz Espantaburros reflects the personality of its creator and his vision of wine in Ribera del Duero. This wine demonstrates that there is much more to this area of Castilla y León than traditionally believed—a fresh and characterful breeze that invites us to discover Ribera del Duero from a new perspective. Undoubtedly, a wine that dispels stereotypes and leaves a lasting impression!
