The 10 best red wines for summer

19/06/2018 Special moments

With summer just around the corner, the heat has arrived and the high temperatures encourage us to cool down with light, fresh and soft wines.
“It’s better to drink fresh white wines in summer. Let’s leave red wines for when the heat is over”. We are sure you have heard this before, but at Decántalo we want to break the myth. This is why we recommend 10 red wines that will make you feel more comfortable in the warmth of this time of year.
Red wines made with little extraction, aged in large barrels or foudres, in cement, pottery. Productions that bring out all their virtues and character with elegance and freshness. Wines with less structure, but complex.

summer wines

Viña Zorzal Garnacha
: From the northwest of Navarre, touching La Rioja, we have this fabulous Grenache wine by the Sanz brothers. Young, fresh and very varietal, it shows us all the potential of this typically variety from Navarre.

Abel Mendoza Jarrarte Maceración Carbónica: we could not go without a carbonic maceration. Abel Mendoza makes this wine in cement presses, respecting all the fruit obtained with this typical way of making wine in Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta.

Guímaro: It is time to travel to the north of Spain. We arrive at La Ribeira Sacra, in the heart of Galicia, the land of the Mencía variety planted on slate soils that flood the bucolic slopes of the rivers Sil and Miño. Here, Guímaro delights us with a young Mencía with all the expression of the variety and of course, with the minerality of the terroir.

Casa Castillo Vino de Finca: Whoever says that there are no light, fresh wines in Jumilla has never tasted this fantastic wine from Casa Castillo. Mediterranean varieties vinified in concrete deposits and aged in vats. This is the safe bet to preserve all the fruit, enhancing its freshness.

Antídoto: A great product by Bertrand Sourdais, who shows all the character and typical features of Ribera del Duero wines with intensity and lightness. A wine that allows us to enjoy all the virtues of this area in a more casual way.

Bellmunt: A Priorat for the summer? Mas d’en Gil has achieved what few in this area have. A juicy wine, where all the fruit of the Grenache and the Carignan is expressed freely, interpreting the Priorat in a more elegant and subtle way.

Costumbres Tinto: In Rioja Baja, Carlos and Isabel give us this delicious Grenache wine fermented in open barrels and aged in used ones, thus maintaining all its fruitiness and all its varietal character. This wine has a small percentage of Graciano that gives it structure and balances its freshness.

Artífice Listán Tinto: All the way from Tenerife, Borja Pérez interprets the wines of this area in a fantastic way. It is a very accessible wine that shows us all the character of the native varieties thanks to the ageing in used barrels and the little intervention in its production.

Las Uvas de la Ira Vino del Pueblo: Daniel Landi offers us this wine made with Grenache from old vineyards in Sierra de Gredos. Very expressive, deep and fresh. The production process, with a soft but long maceration and ageing in foudres, enhances the fruity character of this fantastic wine.

Finca l’Argatà: At the Joan d’Anguera winery, Joan and Josep have followed their father’s footsteps, making very fresh wines without losing the intensity and character of the Montsant wines. Finca l’Argatá presents itself with less volume, but easier to drink and with more freshness.

You no longer have an excuse not to drink red wine this summer. Let the holidays begin!
