About Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir

Lord Sydney was the father of Australia. The idea of a country where only reformed prisoners would arrive through hard work is owed to this British politician who served in the second half of the 18th century. Obviously, the creation of this new state was based on immovable rules, such as the total prohibition of money and alcohol. According to Sydney's thinking, these two were the main reasons behind criminal behavior. And in part, he was right. It must be admitted that it's also not a good idea to mix people with pending crimes with the law and large amounts of ethanol, right?

However, it's almost impossible not to wonder what Lord Sydney would think nowadays, seeing how his project has become one of the most fascinating wine territories, with several benchmarks. One of them is Bass Phillip, famous for their red wines. What would Lord Sydney say when tasting one of them? Without a doubt, if we were to convince him, the bottle on the table would undoubtedly be Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir.

If we’re talking about Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir, we have to start by mentioning that this is one of the three main wines of the Bass Phillip winery. This red wine, together with Bass Phillip Reserve Pinot Noir and Bass Phillip Estate Pinot Noir, form the holy trinity of this winery located in the South Gippsland area, in the Australian state of Victoria.

The three wines are produced in Estate, a 1979 vineyard located in Leongatha (a town near the Strzelecki Ranges) where, year after year, only the best vines from the 3.5 hectares are used. The vineyards have been organic since 1993 and biodynamic since 2002, and the care and tillage are always respectful of the environment. This translates into a very clear premise: let nature speak and limit human presence; however, if human work is necessary, it should be limited to manual and traditional methods, with minimal intervention and no irrigation, where pesticides and fertilisers are absolutely banned. This guarantees the maximum expression of the mineral and loamy soils, with small volcanic debris where low-yielding grapes grow.

In the winery, under the direction of head winemaker Jean-Marie Fourrier, these principles of minimal intervention are maintained. After the manual harvest (where rigorous quality controls are carried out), the Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir grape clusters are crushed and placed in stainless steel tanks where alcoholic fermentation takes place. During this process, racking (where pumps are not used) should be kept to a minimum. Once the wine has been made, Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir will spend 18 months aging in French Ailler barrels.

Lord Sydney's dry country project didn't last long. Soon, the prisoners and convicts began to demand a reward for their work (they might be criminals, but they're not fools). Before long, the distribution of small amounts of wine proved to be the only way to avoid riots and bad vibes. And Lord Sydney had to backtrack. His joy was short-lived. Looking at it closely, this might be where the story of a tradition and an exquisite taste for wines began, leading us today to Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir. Those who don't find consolation just don't want to.

2019

Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir 2019 is a memorable red wine. The nose is intense and concentrated, where floral aromas combine perfectly with the notes of aging (smoky oak). The palate is complex and very powerful. Light, viscous and unctuous to the touch, with a strong fruit core. It can be stored for many years. Long, silky finish.
