About Azul y Garanza Naturaleza Salvaje Blanco
As the legend narrates, Robin Hood would pilfer wealth from the affluent to bestow it upon the destitute. Alongside King Arthur, he is one of the seminal medieval tales of English folklore. And though he is dubbed the "Prince of Thieves," he is certainly not the sole claimant to this title. Throughout history, myriad brigands and outlaws have sought refuge in secluded locales to elude law enforcement. From the densest of forests to rugged mountains, arid deserts, and caverns, these hideaways provided sanctuary and anonymity to those living on the fringes of society. The Bardenas Reales, a stark, unwelcoming, yet enthralling desert-like landscape in southern Navarra (Spain), was an ideal hideout for many local malefactors and criminals pursued by justice. The most notorious of all was Sancho de Rota, alias "Salchicorrota". Just as this 15th-century “Bardenero Robin Hood” delved into the wilds seeking refuge and liberty, the Naturaleza Salvaje de Azul y Garanza project draws inspiration from that very wilderness to craft authentic wines championed by biodiversity and minimal intervention.
Operating from the former cooperative in the village of Carcastillo (Navarra), the winery's team members, María, Fer, and Dani, introduce us to Azul y Garanza Naturaleza Salvaje Blanco. An orange wine sourced from white Grenache vines averaging 40 years old, planted in the arid, calcareous clay soils at an elevation of 550 meters. The desert climate of the Bardenas Reales, with its stark temperature fluctuations between day and night, ensures the production of grapes with high concentration and perfect balance, while regenerative agriculture is practiced to logically and naturally enhance biodiversity. Following a manual harvest, the meticulously selected grapes spontaneously ferment with 5 days of skin contact. The wine then matures in amphorae for 6 months before bottling.
Just as the true grandeur of an outlaw is found in living unfettered, Azul y Garanza embraces this very spirit in its Naturaleza Salvaje Blanco. With an unwavering commitment to authenticity and purity, this wine reflects the most genuine essence of the Bardenas Reales terroir. Sample it and share your impressions...
