About Áster El Espino

The town of Anguix lies in the province of Burgos, in the autonomous community of Castilla y León, in northern Spain. Although it is not widely known as an internationally renowned wine-producing region, it is part of an area that makes up the prestigious Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin. And it is here that, after several attempts that did not meet the expectations of its owners, Áster found the perfect location to build their new generation facilities. This was not an easy task, because in order to find the perfect terroir, they relied on the advice of old winegrowers and professional viticulturists. Specialising in red wines made mainly from the Tempranillo grape variety, known locally as Tinto Fino, their wines are usually enjoyed for their fruity character, structure, complexity and aging potential.

This is where Áster El Espino is born, a red wine from 95 hectares of vineyards lying between the municipalities of La Horra and Anguix. These are Tempranillo vines planted in 1991 on clay-loam soil at an altitude of 780 metres above sea level. They are grown in a traditional way and the grapes are harvested by hand in 20 kilogram boxes through an exhaustive selection process. In the winery, the grapes are selected, destemmed and cold macerated. Fermentation is carried out by plot in stainless steel tanks and, after blending, 50% undergoes malolactic fermentation in tanks and twice used French oak barrels. Finally, the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, 20% of which are new, with two manual rackings.

Relying on the masterful advice of the village elders, Áster El Espino is a wine that comes from a unique terroir that draws on the vigour, power and elegance that have made Ribera del Duero wines so famous.
