About Andeluna 1300 Malbec

To mention Lay is to evoke business. It is a surname that embodies this trait in its very DNA. His father was none other than the inventor of the legendary Lay's potato crisps and one of the key architects of the PepsiCo empire. Yet Warden Lay Jr. chose to broaden his horizons the day he discovered Argentina.

A confessed enthusiast of fishing and hunting, he arrived in Argentina almost by chance, invited by friends. The attraction was immediate. The vastness, the silence, and the untamed nature of Patagonia captivated him irresistibly, and when the opportunity arose to purchase a ranch, he did not hesitate. Argentina ceased to be merely a destination and became home.

His next infatuation occurred in Mendoza, where he met the Reina Rutini family, a prominent name in Argentine wine. From this encounter, more than just a friendship blossomed. Warden Lay Jr. partnered with Ricardo Reina Rutini in a joint venture that would give rise to Andeluna, a winery with the clear objective of expressing the grandeur of the Mendoza terroir from the heights.

This philosophy is impeccably embodied in Andeluna 1300 Malbec, a wine born from vineyards planted at an altitude of 1,300 metres — hence its name — in Tupungato, in the heart of the Valle de Uco. These are among the highest vineyards in Mendoza, where the extreme climate, thermal amplitude, and purity of the air become allies in crafting wines that are vibrant, precise, and full of character.

The Malbec is crafted with meticulous care from the outset: manual selection of clusters, cold pre-fermentation maceration for 3 days to preserve freshness and aromatic expression, and fermentation with selected yeasts in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, around 26°C. A brief sojourn in second- and third-use French oak accompanies the wine without overpowering it, allowing the fruit and the identity of the place to speak with their own voice.

Andeluna 1300 Malbec speaks clearly and loudly. It is a balanced, elegant, and sincere wine, demonstrating that when business intersects with passion, respect for the land, and a healthy dose of intuition, the result can be, quite literally, a wine of great altitude.
