About Disaronno Original Amaretto Almond Liqueur

Did you know that the world’s most consumed Italian liqueur was born from an act of gratitude and love during the Renaissance, becoming an enduring symbol of Italian passion and creativity? In 1525, the artist Bernardino Luini, a disciple of Leonardo da Vinci, was painting the Madonna of the Miracles in Saronno, south of the province of Varese in Lombardy (Italy), and chose a beautiful local innkeeper as his model. To thank him, she prepared an aromatic amber liqueur, which captivated the painter and gave rise to the legend of Amaretto Disaronno Originale, an elixir that evokes centuries of history, romance, and authentic flavour.

The story of Disaronno is closely linked to the Reina family, who have zealously guarded the secret recipe of apricot kernel and herbs since the 17th century, passing it down through generations. In the 20th century, Domenico Reina opened his shop and workshop in the heart of Saronno, and over time, the liqueur became an icon of Italian culture and gastronomy, renowned for its unique flavour and its iconic square bottle designed by a Murano glass master in the 1970s.
